Pointed carbons are the standard all purpose gouging electrode. Controlled copper coating improves electrical conductivity providing more efficient, cooler operation and helps maintain electrode diameter at the point of the arc.
 
Jointed carbons have the added benefit of working without stub loss, with each rod having a female socket and matching male tang. They can be used with semi and fully automatic torches.
 
Flat carbons are speciall designed for close tolerance metal removal and scarfing applications, producing a rectangular groove.

I, Overview

2}  Characteristics of carbon arc air gouging

1. The carbon arc air gouging is much more efficient than the air shovel. It is suitable for working in all positions, especially in the elevation and vertical positions!
2. It is easy to observe and find all kinds of defects in time in the process of cleaning welding root and reverse repair welding seam planing.
3. The carbon arc air gouging can be used in narrow positions and in places where it is difficult to use other planing tools. It is flexible and convenient, and the quality is guaranteed.
4. Carbon arc air gouging can be used to plane and cut some metals that cannot be cut by oxygen acetylene, such as cast iron, stainless steel and non-ferrous metals.
5. The diameter of carbon rod is generally 6-30mm, and the cutting seam is wide, which is a bit wasteful; And narrow slots and slots cannot be realized.
6. When cutting some metal materials, it will cause carburization in the heat affected zone and increase the quenching and hardening sound at the cutting groove.
7. The cost of DC power supply is high.

D. C. Copper Coated Air Arc Gouging Carbon Electrodes

Air Carbon Arc Gouging Electrodes removes metal by utilizing the intense heat of the arc between the carbon-graphite electrode and the substrate to melt material that is subsequently removed from the work area by a jet of air. By controlling the angle of the electrode, the depth of the gouged area can also be controlled.

 

 Caution: 

•   Electrodes must be kept dry. Wet electrodes can flake, or splinter and are dangerous. If electrodes become wet, bake at 300°F for 10 hours before using.

Composition of carbon arc air gouging (cutting) equipment


1. DC power supply: any type of manual arc welding machine can be used as the power supply for carbon arc gouging and cutting; Usually, large capacity DC welding machine (>400A) can be used, or two welding machines can be used in parallel.


2. Air pump: It is required that the air pressure shall not be less than five atmospheres, and the pressure shall be stable, with a large air output (> 0.36L/min)


3. Carbon rod: generally, copper plated solid carbon rod is used, and its section shape can be round or flat. The flat carbon rod groove is wider than the plot groove and is suitable for large plane planning.
