1, Introduction to electrode paste



Electrode paste is a conductive material for ferroalloy furnace, calcium carbide furnace and other electric furnace equipment. Electrode paste, also known as self baking electrode and Soderberg electrode, is made of carbon materials such as calcined coal, metallurgical coke, graphite crushing, anode crushing and calcined petroleum coke at a certain temperature through a series of processes such as batching, kneading and mold forming.


When in use, the electrode paste is loaded into the electrode barrel already installed on the mine thermoelectric furnace. Under the condition of power on, a high-temperature arc is generated in the furnace to ignite coke / blue carbon. Relying on the Joule heat generated when the current passes through and the heat conduction and radiation in the furnace, the electrode paste is coked and burned to form a carbon electrode. Therefore, the electrode paste is also called self baking electrode. The electrode can be used continuously, and can be sintered while being used. Self baking electrode is widely used in ferroalloy electric furnace and calcium carbide furnace because of its simple process and low cost.



Electrode paste is mainly suitable for large-scale closed and open ferroalloy furnace, ferrosilicon and manganese furnace, metal silicon furnace, yellow phosphorus furnace, etc.

1. Standard and non-standard electrode paste: standard electrode paste is mainly used for open ferroalloy furnace and medium and small calcium carbide furnace, and medium temperature asphalt is used as binder; Non standard electrode paste is mainly used in large open calcium carbide furnace. Its dry material particle composition is the same as that of standard electrode paste. However, in order to properly improve the sintering speed of electrode paste, a small amount of tar is added into medium temperature asphalt as binder.

2. Closed paste: this kind of electrode paste is suitable for closed ferroalloy cutting furnace, calcium carbide furnace and other metallurgical furnaces. Anthracite is used as the main raw material for the closed paste. In order to improve the sintering performance of the electrode paste, a small amount of graphite chips and petroleum coke need to be added, and the binder with low softening point is used. Electrode paste is a conductive material for ferroalloy furnace, calcium carbide furnace and other electric furnace equipment. It can withstand high temperature and has a small coefficient of thermal expansion. It has a relatively small resistance coefficient, which can reduce the loss of electric energy. With small porosity, the heated electrode can be oxidized slowly. With high mechanical strength, the electrode will not break due to the influence of mechanical and electrical load. The current is smelted by the arc generated in the furnace through the electrode input. The electrode plays an extremely important role in the whole electric furnace. Without it, the electric furnace cannot play a role. In order to make the electrode work normally under the temperature generated by the arc, it must have high oxidation resistance and conductivity, which is only available for the electrode made of carbon material, because the carbon electrode can withstand the arc temperature of 3500 ºC and only oxidize slowly.




Advantage and Shortage :

It has the characteristics of low ash content, low resistivity, strong conductivity and thermal conductivity, oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance, etc.

The electrode paste is loaded into the electrode shell installed on the electric furnace and sintered. The electrode can be used continuously, and can be sintered while being used. Self baking electrode is widely used in ferroalloy electric furnace, calcium carbide furnace and so on because of its simple process and low cost. After baking, the performance of self baking electrode is not different from that of carbon electrode, but its manufacturing cost is only one eighth of that of graphite electrode and one third of that of carbon electrode.

Electrode paste consumption

Generally, 45% ferrosilicon is about 25kg, 75% ferrosilicon is about 45kg, silicon chromium alloy is about 30kg -50 Kg , silicon manganese alloy is about 30kg, carbon ferrochromium is about 50kg, carbon ferromanganese is about 40kg and calcium carbide is about 30kg
