EXPANDABLE GRAPHITE AS FLAME RETARDANT
One of the principal applications of expandable graphite is as a flame retardant. As a result of the heat of a fire the graphite expands and creates an intumescent layer on the surface of the material. This retards the spread of fire and minimises one of the most harmful effects of combustion, the creation of toxic gases and fumes.
We noted further applications of expandable graphite in the electrical industry, in the chemical industry, and in the lubricating industry.
***The same refers to the expansion pressure. Larger flakes have higher expansion pressure, but fine powders have almost no expansion pressure.
Products Description :
As a new type of functional carbon material, Expanded Graphite (EG) is a loose and porous worm-like substance obtained by intercalating, washing, drying and high-temperature expansion of natural graphite flakes. In addition to the excellent properties of natural graphite, such as cold and heat resistance, corrosion resistance, and self-lubrication, EG also has softness, compression resilience, adsorption, ecological environment coordination, biocompatibility, and radiation resistance that natural graphite does not Etc. As early as the early 1960s, Brodie heated natural graphite with chemical reagents such as sulfuric acid and nitric acid, and discovered expanded graphite. However, its application began only a hundred years later. Since then, many countries have launched research and development of expanded graphite one after another, and made major scientific breakthroughs.
Products Features :
Due to its special structure, graphite has the following special properties:
1) High temperature resistance: The melting point of graphite is 3850 ± 50 ºC, and the boiling point is 4250 ºC. Even if it is burned by ultra-high temperature arc, the weight loss is small and the coefficient of thermal expansion is also small. The strength of graphite strengthens with increasing temperature. At 2000 ºC, the strength of graphite doubles.
2) Electrical and thermal conductivity: The electrical conductivity of graphite is one hundred times higher than that of ordinary non-metallic ores. Thermal conductivity exceeds metal materials such as steel, iron, and lead. The thermal conductivity decreases with increasing temperature. Even at extremely high temperatures, graphite becomes an insulator. Graphite can conduct electricity because each carbon atom in graphite only forms 3 covalent bonds with other carbon atoms, and each carbon atom still retains 1 free electron to transfer charge.
3) Lubricity: The lubricating performance of graphite depends on the size of graphite flakes. The larger the flakes, the smaller the friction coefficient and the better the lubricating performance.
4) Chemical stability: Graphite has good chemical stability at room temperature, and is resistant to acid, alkali and organic solvents.
5) Plasticity: Graphite has good toughness and can be rolled into a very thin sheet.
6) Thermal shock resistance: When used at room temperature, graphite can withstand the drastic change of temperature without damage. When the temperature changes suddenly, the volume of graphite does not change much, and no cracks will occur.
Noted : those with pure ingredients are few and often contain various impurities chemical composition
Advantage :
Compared with other adsorbents,
expanded graphite has many advantages. If activated carbon is used for oil removal on water, it will sink after adsorbing oil, the adsorption capacity is also small, and it is not easy to regenerate; there are also some adsorbents, such as cotton, grass ash, polypropylene fiber, perlite, vermiculite, etc. It also absorbs water while absorbing oil, which causes difficulties in post-processing; expanded graphite has a large adsorption capacity for oils, floats on the water surface after absorbing oil, is easy to catch and recover, and is easy to recycle and handle. It can use extrusion, centrifugal separation, vibration, and solvent Cleaning, burning, heating extraction and other methods, and will not form secondary pollution.
Application :
1.Environmental protection
2.Sealing material
3.Biomedical
4.High-energy battery materials
5.Fire Poof materials
Foreign countries have added some expandable graphite to the mezzanine of aircraft cabin seats, or made them into fireproof sealing strips, fireproof materials, firestops, etc. Once the fire quickly expands, it blocks the fire spreading channel and achieves the purpose of extinguishing the fire. In addition, the fine particles of expandable graphite can be added to ordinary coatings to produce flame retardant antistatic coatings with better effects.
Expanded graphite sheet has good electrical and thermal properties, with an electrothermal conversion rate of more than 97%, and can produce far infrared rays. It is a new type of heating material. Expanded graphite is crushed into fine powder, which has strong scattering and absorption characteristics for infrared waves, and is a good infrared shielding (stealth) material. The expandable graphite is made into a pyrotechnic powder, which explodes instantaneously to form expanded graphite and disperses in a predetermined air space to form an aerosol interfering cloud smoke agent. In addition, expanded graphite can also be used as thermal insulation, sound insulation materials, electromagnetic shielding elements, catalytic materials.
