Synthetic Graphite/Calcined Petroleum Coke Friction material 
Artificial graphite/Synthetic graphite  used in brake pads is generally 30% to 50% is mainly because graphite has extremely high hardness, which can provide good wear resistance and help improve the service life of brake pads. Graphite has excellent high-temperature resistance and can maintain stable friction performance at high temperatures, which helps improve the braking performance of brake pads.

According to the requirements of the friction pad, high-quality petroleum coke is used, and the calcination temperature is strictly controlled according to the special requirements of the massage pad, so that its true density is controlled within a certain range. The produced coke is relatively soft and produces no noise during high-speed friction with the brake disc. Due to its good porosity and good adhesion with other substances, the friction plate has high heat dissipation performance, friction coefficient, and strength.

First, their excellent thermal conductivity (100–150 W/m·K) helps dissipate heat rapidly during braking. When brakes engage, friction generates intense heat (often over 600°C for heavy-duty vehicles); the graphite particles absorb and transfer this heat away from the friction surface, preventing "brake fade" (loss of stopping power due to overheating) and protecting adjacent parts like brake discs from thermal damage.
Second, their low hardness (Mohs hardness 1–2) and lamellar structure reduce abrasive wear. Unlike rigid fillers (e.g., alumina), artificial graphite particles create a smooth, lubricious interface between the brake pad and disc. This minimizes wear on both components, extending the service life of brake systems—critical for commercial vehicles (trucks, buses) and high-mileage passenger cars.

Third, they dampen noise and vibration. Brake squeal, a common issue with friction materials, is mitigated by graphite's ability to absorb vibrational energy and break up sound waves. This improves driving comfort, especially in urban traffic where frequent braking occurs.

In practice, artificial graphite particles (typically 5–50 μm in size) are blended with binders (resins), reinforcing fibers (steel, aramid), and other fillers (barite, vermiculite) to form brake pads and clutch facings. They are widely used in passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and even railway brakes—where high-speed, heavy-load braking demands stable friction performance.

Compared to natural graphite, artificial graphite offers consistent purity (low ash content <0.5%) and controllable particle size, ensuring uniform friction behavior across batches. This reliability makes it a preferred choice for automotive and industrial friction material manufacturers aiming to meet strict safety and durability standards.
